Petards
In June, small kiosks appeared all over the city labeled Venda Petards. City-sanctioned fireworks are pretty exciting for us, coming from a town where fireworks are verboten and dense wood-frame construction predominates.

The eve of Saint John's Day (June 24) is celebrated with a massive do-it-yourself fireworks extravaganza, which starts several days before and climaxes on the night of June 23. June 23 was quite impressive, with hours of continuous explosions throughout the evening and late into the night. Many families with roof terraces also set up lights and decorations and ate dinner outside.
Lusi, who doesn't mind the occasional firework, did not enjoy the relentless noise, and she ended up retreating to the basement. Henry joined her there at his bedtime because it was so loud.
